The presence of the mother in Victorian portraits of children is often difficult to see, as her comfort comes from behind a tapestry or a curtain.  The strange form suggests absence as much as being, and the haunting notion that her spirit remains when her physical presence is gone.  This album is focused on the mother, with everything else in the image either removed or subdued to amplify her being, highlighting her form as she soothes the child while hidden within the frame.
